Before Erasure, Vince Clarke helped start Depeche Mode and wrote most of the band’s debut album, Speak & Spell. He then formed Yazoo with Alison Moyet and made a single with Eric Radcliffe as the Assembly. Erasure gave him a new songwriting partner in Andy Bell.
Clarke knows when a synth part should catch your ear and when it should leave room for Bell. The repeating figures in “Chorus” are easy to pick out. “A Little Respect” builds excitement around the vocal, while “Blue Savannah” sounds expansive without becoming busy. The individual parts are memorable, but they work together as songs.
Collaborators including Flood, Stephen Hague, Gareth Jones, Martyn Phillips, Frankmusik, and Richard X have helped shape the sound of different records. Through those changes, Bell and Clarke have remained songwriting partners. Both contribute to the melodies and emotional character that make the music recognizably Erasure.
Clarke’s 2023 solo album Songs of Silence offers something different: wordless, slow-moving electronic pieces that step away from verse-and-chorus songwriting. Compare it with Chorus to hear how differently he uses electronic sounds inside and outside pop songs.
