Listening notes

Inside Chorus

The title track gives Chorus its direction immediately: bright, sharply defined synthesizers, a steady pulse, and Andy Bell singing above it all. After the lavish sound of Wild!, the arrangements feel more exposed. That makes this a particularly good Erasure album for listeners who love hearing how the electronic parts fit together.

“Love to Hate You” has the most immediate pop appeal, while “Am I Right?” slows things down and sounds less certain of itself. “Siren Song” is more atmospheric, without the long passages Erasure would explore on the self-titled album. Martyn Phillips’ production makes the synth details easy to hear while keeping Bell and the melodies in front.

Try Chorus as your second or third Erasure album, especially if the synth arrangements are what first drew you in. Start with the original ten songs. If you want to go further, the 2020 expanded edition adds material for collectors.
