Vince Clarke stepped outside pop structure on Songs of Silence
Vince Clarke announced his first solo album, Songs of Silence, in September 2023. Mute released the ten-track instrumental album on November 17, 2023.
Clarke described two working rules: the sounds would come from Eurorack modular synthesis, and each track would remain based around one note. The result is deliberately distant from the compact melodic pop structures most associated with his work in Erasure, Yazoo, and Depeche Mode.
Why Erasure listeners should hear it
The album isolates texture, repetition, and slow change. Hearing Clarke work without the expectation of a pop vocal makes the restraint inside Erasure arrangements easier to notice when you return to them.
