Inside Nightbird
Nightbird is easy to recommend to someone who lost touch with Erasure after the early hits. The songs are warm, the arrangements leave plenty of room for Andy Bell, and the album never seems in a hurry. “No Doubt” opens gently; “Here I Go Impossible Again” soon picks up the pace.
“Breathe” is the obvious starting point, with a melody that stays with you. “Don’t Say You Love Me” and “Here I Go Impossible Again” are just as direct: the choruses are strong, and the arrangements give Bell room to sing them without crowding him.
If you mainly know Erasure’s 1980s and early-1990s albums, this is a good place to pick up the story. Follow it with Union Street to hear familiar songs rearranged for acoustic instruments.
