Inside Other People’s Songs

A covers album can become karaoke with better production. Other People’s Songs is more interesting when Andy Bell and Vince Clarke expose a different emotional angle in familiar material.

“Solsbury Hill” is the obvious public entry point, but the record’s range—from “Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me)” to “Can’t Help Falling in Love” and “Video Killed the Radio Star”—turns the album into a test of what remains recognizably Erasure when the songwriting credit changes.

Do not use it as the first explanation of the duo. Use it after The Innocents or Chorus, when you can hear the transformation as interpretation rather than mistake it for the core catalog.
