Inside Other People’s Songs

Other People’s Songs gives Andy Bell and Vince Clarke a different assignment: choose songs by other writers and make them work as Erasure recordings. Some choices are familiar enough to invite instant comparison, while others fit the duo so comfortably that the change of songwriter becomes less noticeable.

“Solsbury Hill” is the obvious public entry point, but the record’s range—from “Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me)” to “Can’t Help Falling in Love” and “Video Killed the Radio Star”—turns the album into a test of what remains recognizably Erasure when the songwriting credit changes.

Do not use it as the first explanation of the duo. Use it after The Innocents or Chorus, when you can hear the transformation as interpretation rather than mistake it for the core catalog.
