Inside Loveboat

Loveboat refuses the polished frame that many listeners treat as Erasure’s natural state. Guitars and rougher textures sit closer to the front; the record feels less sealed and less interested in behaving like a safe turn-of-the-century update.

That makes it a difficult first recommendation and a valuable later one. “Freedom” offers the clearest pop doorway, while songs such as “Alien” and “Moon & the Sky” make more sense when the album is allowed to establish its own weather.

If Loveboat initially feels like a wrong turn, put it beside the controlled surfaces of Nightbird. Erasure’s durability comes partly from the fact that these two records can belong to the same duo without being forced into the same finish.
