Best career archive: From Moscow to Mars. Best focused album expansion: the 2020 three-CD Chorus. Best sensible two-disc upgrade: choose Wild! or Cowboy according to the album you already love.

Start with what you want to hear: extra songs from a favorite album, different mixes of the singles, or recordings of a particular tour. A career anthology, an album book set, and a colored-vinyl repress may sit in the same retailer category while offering completely different kinds of value.

From Moscow to Mars: the deep archive

The 2016 anthology was curated to mark thirty years since Wonderland. Its twelve CDs include singles, separate selections by Andy Bell and Vince Clarke, b-sides, remixes, live recordings, rarities, and a radio documentary. The thirteenth disc is a DVD of The Wild! Concert, with backstage footage. It is the edition for someone who wants the side roads in one deliberate object.

It is not the best first purchase. Its scale makes sense after the main albums have supplied context. Knowing the finished albums first makes it much easier to hear what changed in the demos and alternate mixes.

Chorus expanded: the strongest album case study

BMG’s 2020 three-CD edition puts a remastered album on disc one, b-sides and remixes on disc two, and a live performance of the album from the Phantasmagorical Entertainment Tour on disc three. You can hear the original album, explore the music released around it, then hear the same songs performed on tour.

If Chorus is already central to your Erasure listening, this is the cleanest recommendation here. The added material explains the era instead of merely accumulating around it.

Wild! 30th anniversary: a focused two-disc expansion

The 2019 edition pairs a remastered album with rare remixes, b-sides, live tracks, and five tracks described as previously unreleased in the official announcement. The hardback-book presentation and new sleeve notes make it an archival upgrade without the physical and financial scale of a career box.

Cowboy expanded: the later-catalog correction

The 2024 two-CD hardback edition is valuable partly because Cowboy can disappear between the canonical early run and later fan favorites. It includes a new 2024 master plus b-sides, remixes, live tracks, demos, and curiosities. For listeners who already rate “In My Arms,” “Rain,” and “Don’t Say Your Love Is Killing Me,” it deepens an album rather than asking them to buy the hits again.

Wonderland and The Circus in 2011: early history with video

The three-disc reissues of the first two albums combined two CDs with a DVD. They are historically useful because they document Erasure before and during the breakthrough. Availability and regional licensing can complicate the hunt, so verify the exact edition and included discs before treating a listing as complete.

What about colored-vinyl reissues?

The 2024 single-disc editions of Tomorrow’s World, Snow Globe, and The Violet Flame put core albums back on vinyl in new colors. They are straightforward catalog objects, not archive boxes. That can be a virtue if the album itself is what you want.

The buying order

  1. Choose the album or period you already care about.
  2. Read the official contents, not a marketplace title.
  3. Decide whether you want music, book-style context, video, or collectability.
  4. Check that every advertised disc and printed element is present.
  5. Compare the total cost with the amount of material you will actually use.
