Erasure on Vinyl: A Practical Buying Guide

Buy an album you want to play, then check the exact edition. For a used record, the condition of the vinyl and sleeve matters. For a reissue, check the track list, label, and what is actually included.

Choose the album first

The Innocents, Wild!, and Chorus are useful starting points. Pick the one whose songs you like most. Once you know which records you return to, you have a better reason to compare their editions or collect the singles.

Original copy or reissue?

An original copy may appeal for its period sleeve, labels, and inserts. A reissue may be easier to find new. Neither description tells you how a particular copy will sound. Look for a clear catalog number, label, track list, and description of any remaster, then check the seller’s condition notes.

Format matters, too. BMG’s 2024 expanded Cowboy is a two-CD hardback book with a new master and a disc of b-sides, remixes, demos, and live material. Mute’s December 2024 editions of Tomorrow’s World, Snow Globe, and The Violet Flame are single-disc colored-vinyl reissues. An “expanded edition” search can lead to a CD set even when you intended to buy an LP.

Five things to check before ordering

• Title and format: confirm that the listing is for the album and format you want. A 12-inch single is easy to mistake for an LP in a small photograph.
• Catalog number and label: use these to identify the edition, especially when several versions share the same cover.
• Vinyl and sleeve condition: look for separate grades and photographs of the actual copy when buying used.
• Track list and extras: check the discs, inserts, bonus songs, and mixes included in that particular release.
• Shipping and returns: read the seller’s packing and returns information before paying.

A first shelf you will actually use

The Innocents, Wild!, Chorus, I Say I Say I Say, and The Neon offer five different points in Erasure’s career. There is no need to buy them all at once. Add Pop! if you mainly want the early singles, or explore The Two Ring Circus if remixes interest you. Check the format carefully: its CD and cassette editions add live material.

When a particular pressing is worth seeking out

Have a reason you can name: a mix you want, different artwork, an insert, a bonus record, or an edition that matters to you. A listing described as “rare” still needs those details. Keep a simple record of the catalog numbers you own so you can spot a duplicate before ordering.
